China City Guide: Where to Go on Your First Trip

Compare Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Chengdu and nearby regions to shape a first China itinerary that fits your interests and pace.

A first journey works best when it connects a few complementary places rather than racing through a long checklist. Start with the experiences you value most, then build a practical route.

Beijing

Choose Beijing for imperial history, hutong neighbourhoods and access to the Great Wall. Four to six nights gives enough time to explore without rushing.

Shanghai and the water towns

Shanghai combines contemporary city life with historic lanes, museums and easy rail access to classical gardens and canal towns.

Xi’an

Xi’an adds ancient history, city walls and a distinctive food culture. It connects well with Beijing and Chengdu by rail or air.

Chengdu and Sichuan

Choose Chengdu for relaxed neighbourhoods, Sichuan food, cultural sites and access to mountain landscapes.

How many cities?

For a 10- to 14-day first trip, two or three bases usually feel more rewarding than five hurried stops. Our team can balance travel time, weather and your preferred pace.
