Getting Around China: Flights, High-Speed Rail & Local Transport

China is vast, but its transport network makes multi-city journeys surprisingly manageable. The best itinerary usually combines high-speed rail, selected flights and pre-arranged local transfers.

High-speed rail

High-speed rail is often the easiest option for journeys of a few hours. Stations can be very large, so arrive early, keep your passport accessible and download your ticket and destination details before boarding. Wi-Fi availability varies by train and route.

Domestic flights

Flights are useful for long distances between regions. Allow time for airport transfers and security, and avoid tight same-day connections where a delay would affect an important booking.

Metro, taxis and ride-hailing

Large cities have extensive metro systems and plentiful taxis. Carry your destination in Chinese characters, keep more than one payment option available and allow extra time during peak periods.

Driving in mainland China

International visitors generally cannot drive using an overseas licence alone. Rules and temporary permit arrangements vary, so do not assume a rental car will be available. A licensed local driver is usually the simpler option for flexible regional travel.
